Prof. Ivo Petrov

Prof. Dr. Ivo Petrov is the Medical Director and Head of the Clinic of Cardiology and Angiology at the University Hospital Acibadem City Clinic. He is a teacher, innovator and pioneer in the field of endovascular therapy in Bulgaria. He has three specialties – internal medicine, interventional cardiology and angiology.
Prof. Dr. Ivo Petrov was the first invasive cardiologist in Bulgaria and in the world to implant an endoprosthesis in a child with aortic aneurysm and dissection. He also performed the first procedure of carotid stenting and thrombus extraction of cerebral vessels for the treatment of stroke.
He pioneered internationally the implantation of bifurcation stents in a complex pathology of the arteries of the heart. In 2018, he performed MitraClip implantation surgery for the first time in this country on an 83-year-old patient with mitral stenosis.
Prof. Petrov is the person who introduced into the Bulgarian practice the performance of renal denervation in resistant hypertension, as well as endovascular treatment in chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency, May-Turner syndrome, stenotic and aneurysmal pathology of the abdominal aorta.
He has lectured in America, Africa, Asia and Europe and is fluent in French, Spanish, English and Russian.

Professor Petrov is the author of numerous publications in his field in some of the world’s most renowned journals. He has participated in numerous clinical trials.
In 2018 he was selected as “Man of the Year”. The distinction was awarded for the unprecedented rescue of a patient with a ruptured aorta by bloodless surgery entering through the femoral artery. It was the first time in the world that a stent was placed in a risky case like this.
In 2022, Prof. Petrov was selected by the Bulgarian Medical Association as “Doctor of the Year”.
In 2023, Professor Petrov performed a mitral valve replacement on a 98-year-old female patient who recently turned 100 years old and is in a wonderful state of body and mind. She is the great-grandmother of Dr. Kamen Stoychev, one of the partners of Inkmed Ltd.
